The Lessons of Peace

Where Christ places us—we are to remain; where he sends us—we are to go. In the heat of life's conflicts, set upon on every hand by a multitude of things which tend to distract our peace—we are to maintain an unruffled calm, and all the tenderness and simplicity of the heart of a little child. That is the problem of life and of living which Christ sets for us, and which he will help us to solve, if we accept him as our teacher. As the tender grass and even sweet flowers live and grow all through the winter under the deep snows, and come forth in the spring-time in beauty—so our hearts may remain loving, tender, and joyous through life's sorest winter under the snows of trial and sorrow.

Desperate Days

"But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." (Heb. 11:6).

The Bible is full of such days. Its record is made up of them, its songs are inspired by them, its prophecy is concerned with them, and its revelation has come through them.The desperate days are the stepping-stones in the path of light. They seem to have been God's opportunity and man's school of wisdom.

There is a story of an Old Testament love feast in Psalm 107, and in every story of deliverance the point of desperation gave God His chance. The "wit's end" of desperation was the beginning of God's power. Recall the promise of seed as the stars of heaven, and as the sands of the sea, to a couple as good as dead. Read again the story of the Red Sea and its deliverance, and of Jordan with its ark standing mid-stream. Study once more the prayers of Asa, Jehoshaphat, and Hezekiah, when they were sore pressed and knew not what to do. Go over the history of Nehemiah, Daniel, Hosea, and Habakkuk. Stand with awe in the darkness of Gethsemane, and linger by the grave in Joseph's garden through those terrible days. Call the witnesses of the early Church, and ask the apostles the story of their desperate days.
Desperation is better than despair.
Faith did not make our desperate days. Its work is to sustain and solve them. The only alternative to a desperate faith is despair, and faith holds on and prevails.There is no more heroic example of desperate faith than that of the three Hebrew children. The situation was desperate, but they answered bravely, "Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning, fiery furnace; and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up." I like that, "but if not !"
I have only space to mention Gethsemane. Ponder deeply its "Nevertheless." "If it is possible?nevertheless!" Deep darkness had settled upon the soul of our Lord. Trust meant anguish unto blood and darkness to the descent of hell--Nevertheless! Nevertheless!!

O amor é paciente

O amor é paciente.

Sejam completamente humildes e dóceis, e sejam pacientes, suportando uns aos outros com amor. (Efésios 4:2)

O amor funciona. É o motivador mais poderoso e tem uma profundidade e um significado bem maiores do que a maioria das pessoas pensa.

O amor sempre faz o que é melhor para os outros e tem o poder d nos fortalecer para enfrentar grandes problemas.

O amor muda a nossa motivação de vida. Nenhum casamento é bem sucedido sem amor. O amor é construído sobre dois pilares que melhor definem o que ele é. Esses pilares são a paciência e a bondade.

A paciência no amor ira lhe inspirar a ser uma pessoa paciente. Quando você decide ser paciente, você responde de maneira positiva à uma situação negativa. Você é tardio em irar-se. A paciência traz a calma interior em meio à tempestade exterior.

Ninguém gosta de ter uma pessoa impaciente por perto, estar próximo de alguém assim faz você reagir com raiva, insensatez e de maneiras lamentáveis.

A raiva quase nunca torna as coisas melhores, na verdade, ela geralmente cria mais problema. A paciência é respirar fundo, pois ela purifica o ar, ela impede a insensatez de espalhar seu veneno por toda casa.

Ter paciência é escolher controlar suas emoções ao invés de permitir que elas lhe controlem, é demonstrar discrição ao invés de pagar mal com mal.

Você reage com raiva quando lhe tratam injustamente? Se a resposta for sim, você esta espalhando veneno ao invés de remédio.

A raiva é causada, na maioria das vezes, quando um forte desejo por algo é combinado com decepção ou tristeza. Você não consegue o que quer, então começa a se irritar por dentro. Por outro lado, a paciência nos torna sábios, ela não se apressa em julgar, mas ouve o que a outra pessoa esta dizendo.

Ela espera na entrada enquanto a raiva deseja invadir com violência. A paciência aguarda para ver toda a situação antes de julgar.

Diz a bíblia: “O homem paciente dá prova de grande entendimento, mas o precipitado revela insensatez” (Provérbios 15:18).

Assim como a falta de paciência fará do seu lar uma zona de guerra, a pratica da paciência estimulará a paz e a tranquilidade.

A paciência é o lugar onde o amor encontra sabedoria!

A paciência entende que todos falham, a paciência lhe capacita a permanecer firme durante os tempos difíceis do seu relacionamento, ao invés de lhe esgotar com as pressões. Mas o seu cônjuge pode contar com um marido ou uma esposa paciente?

Como seria o tom de voz do seu lar se você colocasse em pratica essa abordagem bíblica: “Tenham cuidado para que ninguém retribua mal com mal, mas sejam sempre bondosos uns para com os outros e para com todos.” (1 Tessalonicenses 5:15)?

Poucos de nós praticam a paciência de forma adequada, e nenhum de nós a pratica naturalmente. Mas o homem e a mulher sábios verão a paciência como um ingrediente essencial no casamento.

O desafio de amar é um processo, e a primeira atitude que você deve decidir ter, é ser paciente.

Pois o amor é paciente!

O poder do silencio

Aquietai-vos, e sabei que eu sou Deus. (Sl 46.10.)

Haverá em todo o coral uma só nota musical tão poderosa como o é a ênfase da pausa? Já percebeu como nos Salmos é eloqüente a palavra Selah (pausa)? Haverá silêncio mais palpitante do que a quietude que precede a tempestade, e a estranha calma que parece cair sobre a natureza antes de alguma convulsão ou fenômeno? Haverá alguma coisa capaz de nos tocar o coração como o poder da tranqüilidade?

Aquele que pára de operar com as suas próprias mãos, encontra "a paz de Deus, que excede todo o entendimento"; há um "sossego e confiança" que é fonte de toda a força; uma doce paz que nada pode abalar; um profundo descanso que o mundo não pode dar nem tampouco

tirar. Há no mais profundo da alma uma recâmara de paz onde Deus habita; e se entrarmos ali e afastarmos todos os outros sons, poderemos ouvir a Sua voz mansa e delicada.

Quando uma roda gira bem velozmente em torno do próprio eixo, há um lugar, bem no centro, onde não há movimento; assim, na vida mais ocupada pode haver um lugar onde ficamos a sós com Deus em constante quietude. Só há uma maneira de se conhecer a Deus:

Is there any note of music in all the chorus as mighty as the emphatic pause? Is there any word in all the Psalter more eloquent than that one word, Selah Pause.? Is there anything more thrilling and awful than the hush that comes before the bursting of the tempest and the strange quiet that seems to fall upon all nature before some preternatural phenomenon or convulsion? Is there anything that can touch our hearts as the power of stillness?

There is for the heart that will cease from itself, "the peace of God that passeth all understanding," a "quietness and confidence" which is the source of all strength, a sweet peace "which nothing can offend," a deep rest which the world can neither give nor take away. There is in the deepest center of the soul a chamber of peace where God dwells, and where, if we will only enter in and hush every other sound, we can hear His still, small voice.

Biblical Negotiating

Negotiation is the art of bargaining with others in order to complete a business transaction. Often, I get asked how to negotiate in business as well as how clients can structure sales presentations to bring about sales. There is no magic formula to help you close the deal. However, I have learned some key principles that have helped me. I have also learned that biblical principles protect you from crossing the line between good sales technique and unethical manipulation.

1. Be willing to walk away from the deal.

Of course you want to make the deal. However, if you want it too badly, you have no bargaining power. You will cave in and give too much just to make the deal. Jesus taught, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. “(Matthew 6:34, NIV)

It is important to release every transaction to the Lord, regardless of the pressure you feel. If you give a person everything they want, you will probably land the deal. However, this gives you no negotiating position. When you are willing to walk away from a deal, you have negotiating power.

Auctions are good examples of negotiation. When I purchase something at an auction, my first principle is to determine in advance what I am willing to pay. Since I am looking for a deal, price is important. When the bidding passes my good deal price, I stop biding. Other times, I make an offer and explain that it is my best price. Then, the seller can take or leave the transaction, as can I.

2. Understand what factors make up your bottom line.

This includes the price you are willing to pay and the terms you will agree to. I will not help clients negotiate until they are clear about what their acceptable terms are.

One client built custom windows and had a warehouse full of wrong sized windows. I helped him sell them to a builder at a huge discount, who agreed to work with the miscellaneous sizes. The builder paid 15% of the cost, but my client got some cash. My client’s bottom line in negotiating with a builder involved using the miss-sized windows. The successful negotiation meant that the windows didn’t end up in a dumpster.

Another example of remaining firm on your terms happened when I bought an investment home. I offered far less than the asking price. When the seller was insulted by the low price, I explained that it was the maximum price I could afford to pay since it would be rental property. I invited the seller to take the offer or leave it. He passed. However, months later he came back and wanted to take the price.

Jesus asked a person, "What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:36, NIV) Unless you know what you want, you won’t get it. Be clear about your bottom line terms.

3. Don’t waste time.

Psalm 90:12 instructs us to make the most of our time. One implication in negotiation is to avoid making silly offers that no one could afford to accept or haggling over the last dollar of a transaction.

I worked with a client who wanted to buy a business. My client’s last offer was $220,000 cash. The seller wanted $230,000 which was still below my client’s maximum price. However, they were at an impasse. I told my client to take the $230,000 and move on. While further haggling may have saved a few thousand dollars, the several extra weeks it would have taken was time that could have been put to better use.

4. Show the seller the money.

I offered $300 for an item at a home sale, but the seller wanted $450. I said I would offer $300 cash. The seller came back with $400. Instead of making another offer, I took three one hundred-dollar bills out and said, “I will give these to you now if you accept the price.” He took the cash.

When buying higher ticket items, I determine in advance the price I am willing to pay. After a short time, I write out a check for my price and hand it over to the sales person. As I write the check, they start thinking about commission. When I hand over the check, the sales person usually says they’re sorry but my price is too low. Then, I tear the check in half, and write my cell phone number on the half with my price. As I give it to the sales person, I explain that I am going to another dealer with the same offer. I invite the sales person to call me if they want the deal before I buy elsewhere. Most of the time, they do!

In the Bible business transactions were immediate. Moses shared the following standard for wage transactions, “Pay him his wages each day before sunset.” (Deuteronomy 24:15a, NIV)

5. Understand the market.

You can’t make reasonable offers or entertain sales offers if you don’t know what the market will support. The prophet Hosea wrote that “people without understanding will come to ruin!” (Hosea 4:14, NIV)

A good friend wanted to unload a property and asked $250,000. He received an offer for $215,000 which he planned to reject. I helped him do the market research that demonstrated that the asking price was too high. He settled on $220,000 rather than lose the buyer.

It’s also important to understand the value of using cash. Most people need to finance $6,000 to $15,000 for a used car. If you can write a check on the spot, you should press for a better price because the buyer who offers $400 more may not get financed.

6. Understand what the seller wants and needs.

When selling a business, understand that a seller’s motivation is a key factor. King Solomon taught, “The purposes of a man's heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” (Proverbs 20:5, NIV)

I was working on one transaction with a client to buy a small mobile home park. The price was around $1.5 million; my client wanted to pay $1.25 million. The seller was in a strong position, and the property had good cash flow. The seller was older and wanted long term income without continuing to manage the property. I suggested offering a longer term land contract with a solid down payment. The seller accepted, liked the higher interest rate, and the deal closed.

7. Know when to stop talking.

After you make an offer, say nothing and wait for an answer. Time will be your friend. If you start talking after you make your offer; you are negotiating with yourself, not the seller. Be patient. As King Solomon understood and said, “A patient man has great understanding.” (Proverbs 14:29a, NIV)

None of these principles will be effective unless you are willing to walk away from a deal. Sometimes when a transaction starts to fall through, it may be the Lord’s way of protecting you. Let biblical principles help you walk through the doors God opens, rather than banging through closed doors on your own.

Scripture states, "For vexation slays the foolish man, And anger kills the simple" (Job 5:2 NASB).

In today's work environment, we often harbor resentments toward our boss or manager. However, when we allow our anger to build inside, we are the loser. We may explode directly to our boss, not a good idea. We will either damage our relationship, or even get fired. If we keep our anger inside, we become damaged by our own anger. Medical experts have documented anger will cause illness. If we are angry, request a time to discuss the issue with your manager. Clearly and calmly outline your concern and issues, offer possible solutions. These steps will keep your work and relationships intact, and you in better health.

As a manager...

As a manager, are you planning for the person who will take your place, or do you believe you will be in the saddle forever?

Scripture relates, "Now when David reached old age, he made Solomon king over Israel" (1 Chronicles 23:1 NASB).

As managers, we must plan for our replacement for three reasons. First, scripture give us many examples of passing the mantle. Second, the business owner deserves consistency of management to allow the business to grow and prosper after you leave. Third, if we want to be promoted within our company, our replacement must be ready. Often, promotions are missed because of a concern about who can fill our current shoes. Pour yourself into your staff, build them up, teach them, train them, and when the time comes, you can step down knowing that everything is in good hands.

Joined in God

"As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing" (2 Cor. 6:10).

Sorrow was beautiful, but her beauty was the beauty of the moonlight shining through the leafy branches of the trees in the wood, and making little pools of silver here and there on the soft green moss below.
When Sorrow sang, her notes were like the low sweet call of the nightingale, and in her eyes was the unexpectant gaze of one who has ceased to look for coming gladness. She could weep in tender sympathy with those who weep, but to rejoice with those who rejoice was unknown to her.
Joy was beautiful, too, but his was the radiant beauty of the summer morning. His eyes still held the glad laughter of childhood, and his hair had the glint of the sunshine's kiss. When Joy sang his voice soared upward as the lark's, and his step was the step of a conqueror who has never known defeat. He could rejoice with all who rejoice, but to weep with those who weep was unknown to him.
"But we can never be united," said Sorrow wistfully.
"No, never." And Joy's eyes shadowed as he spoke. "My path lies through the sunlit meadows, the sweetest roses bloom for my gathering, and the blackbirds and thrushes await my coming to pour forth their most joyous lays."
"My path," said Sorrow, turning slowly away, "leads through the darkening woods, with moon-flowers only shall my hands be filled. Yet the sweetest of all earth-songs--the love song of the night--shall be mine; farewell, Joy, farewell."
Even as she spoke they became conscious of a form standing beside them; dimly seen, but of a Kingly Presence, and a great and holy awe stole over them as they sank on their knees before Him.
"I see Him as the King of Joy," whispered Sorrow, "for on His Head are many crowns, and the nailprints in His hands and feet are the scars of a great victory. Before Him all my sorrow is melting away into deathless love and gladness, and I give myself to Him forever."
"Nay, Sorrow," said Joy softly, "but I see Him as the King of Sorrow, and the crown on His head is a crown of thorns, and the nailprints in His hands and feet are the scars of a great agony. I, too, give myself to Him forever, for sorrow with Him must be sweeter than any joy that I have known."
"Then we are one in Him," they cried in gladness, "for none but He could unite Joy and Sorrow."
Hand in hand they passed out into the world to follow Him through storm and sunshine, in the bleakness of winter cold and the warmth of summer gladness, "as sorrowful yet always rejoicing."

While Joy, thy bright companion once, grown colder,

A Simple Prayer

I went to America some years ago with the captain of a steamer, who was a very devoted Christian. When off the coast of Newfoundland he said to me, "The last time I crossed here, five weeks ago, something happened which revolutionized the whole of my Christian life. We had George Mueller of Bristol on board. I had been on the bridge twenty-four hours and never left it. George Mueller came to me, and said, "Captain I have come to tell you that I must be in Quebec Saturday afternoon." "It is impossible," I said. "Very well, if your ship cannot take me, God will find some other way. I have never broken an engagement for fifty-seven years. Let us go down into the chart-room and pray."

I looked at that man of God, and thought to myself, what lunatic asylum can that man have come from? I never heard of such a thing as this. "Mr. Mueller," I said, "do you know how dense this fog is?" "No," he replied, "my eye is not on the density of the fog, but on the living God, who controls every circumstance of my life."

He knelt down and prayed one of the most simple prayers, and when he had finished I was going to pray; but he put his hand on my shoulder, and told me not to pray. "First, you do not believe He will answer; and second I BELIEVE HE HAS, and there is no need whatever for you to pray about it."

I looked at him, and he said, "Captain, I have known my Lord for fifty-seven years, and there has never been a single day that I have failed to get audience with the King. Get up, Captain and open the door, and you will find the fog gone." I got up, and the fog was indeed gone. On Saturday afternoon, George Mueller was in Quebec for his engagement.--Selected

No entanto, a Escritura diz: "Para quem o Senhor ama Ele reprova, assim como o pai, ao filho a quem quer bem" (Provérbios 03:12 NVI).

Dado que nenhum de nós é perfeito, a disciplina virá ao nosso caminho, às vezes, espero que de uma forma profissional e consistente. Quando somos criticados, não atacar de volta. Não fique na defensiva. Ouça os comentários com cuidado. Quando você está errado, rapidamente admitir o seu erro, e resolver para corrigir o seu trabalho. Então, graças a seu superior para apontar a área em seu trabalho a necessidade de melhoria. Quando exibimos esta atitude humilde, o nosso chefe será espantado e impressionado. Nosso valor vai aumentar. Nosso trabalho vai melhorar a partir de corrigir e ajustar nossos hábitos de trabalho. Embora esta atitude pode ser difícil, como nós aprendemos a aceitar a crítica construtiva, o nosso desempenho melhora.

However, scripture states, "For whom the Lord loves He reproves, even as a father, the son in whom he delights" (Proverbs 3:12 NASB).

Given that none of us are perfect, discipline will come our way at times, hopefully in a professional and consistent manner. When we are criticized, don't lash back. Don't be defensive. Listen to the comments carefully. When you are wrong, quickly admit your error, and resolve to correct your work. Then, thank your superior for pointing out the area in your work needing improvement. When we display this humble attitude, our boss will be amazed and impressed. Our stature will increase. Our work will improve from correcting and adjusting our work habits. While this attitude may be hard, as we learn to accept constructive criticism, our performance improves.

A Escritura diz: "Ponha longe de você uma boca mentirosa, e colocar os lábios tortuosos longe de você" (Provérbios 4:24 NVI).

Hoje, muitas pessoas estão preocupadas em ter conversas com fio ou gravada sem seu conhecimento. Líderes em política e negócios se sentem constrangidos quando o seu envolvimento em atividades ilegais tem-se manifestado ao público. A chave não é se você concorda com o conceito de gravação de conversas, mas que cada pessoa precisa para garantir que cada palavra é verdadeira e fala como se Deus está ouvindo, que Ele é. Durante cada conversa de negócios, pergunte-se se outros funcionários, agentes do governo, e outros estavam ouvindo, você ficaria constrangido ou exposto à acusação de má conduta? O mais importante, Deus está sempre ouvindo. Quando todas as suas palavras estão honrando a Deus e aos outros, a sua integridade irá mostrar, colocar seu negócio em uma base sólida para o sucesso.

Scripture says, "Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and put devious lips far from you" (Proverbs 4:24 NASB).

Today, many people are concerned with having conversations wired or recorded without their knowledge. Leaders in politics and business have been embarrassed when their involvement in illegal activities has been manifested to the public. The key is not whether you agree with the concept of recording conversations, but that each person needs to ensure each word is truthful and spoken as if God is listening, which He is. During each business conversation, ask yourself, if other employees, government agents, and others were listening, would you be embarrassed or exposed to accusation of wrongdoing? Most importantly, God is always listening. When all your words are honoring to God and others, your integrity will show, placing your business on a firm foundation for success.

Voluntários apóiam PEPE e POPE na África

Recentemente, os missionários do Voluntários Sem Fronteiras em Kayes, cidade do ocidente do Mali, na África, recebeu a visita de oito brasileiros da PIB de Curitiba (PR). Eles foram ao país oferecer atendimento odontológico à população local; apoiar as atividades cotidianas dos Radicais, principalmente ao PEPE (Programa de Educação Pré-Escolar) e conhecer o campo missionário. Os voluntários puderam conhecer, na prática, os trabalhos dos nossos missionários desenvolvidos naquela comunidade.

Os irmãos de Curitiba levaram para o Mali um consultório odontológico portátil, que chegou ao país em perfeitas condições, mesmo após 18 horas de transporte aéreo e 8 horas terrestre. A permanência do grupo foi curta; o atendimento odontológico foi feito apenas durante 10 dias, mas de forma intensiva. No POPE (Programa de Odontologia Preventiva e Educativa) duas dentistas conseguiram atender a 78 pessoas, num total de 115 consultas e 270 procedimentos.

“Seria impossível dizer tudo o que estes amados irmãos fizeram, e muito mais complicado seria escrever o desdobramento desta ação. Uma das pessoas atendidas sofria com dores de dente há mais de seis anos e teve seu problema resolvido. Outro caso é de uma criança que tinha quase todos os dentes estragados, o Aliu; a mudança foi tremenda. Tenho certeza que essas pessoas levarão estas marcas de amor por um longo período! Que o Senhor complete esta obra na vida destas pessoas e de tantas outras com quem eles tiveram contato”, diz a missionária Amanda Pereira.

Os Radicais também receberam apoio ao PEPE de uma pedagoga e dos demais irmãos do grupo da PIB de Curitiba, que doaram materiais didáticos ao programa.

Deus tem usado tremendamente as vidas de nossos missionários para o alcance do seu povo. Os Radicais são gratos a todos os que juntos com eles, de alguma forma, participam deste projeto que tem impactado nações.
